BUYING
Are you thinking of buying a new computer?

For them to accurately access the value of your computer, they will probably
need the following information:
- Processor Type (e.g. Pentium P4 1.8ghz)
- Memory Size (e.g. 512mb Ram)
- Hard Disc Size (e.g. 20gb)
- Operating System (e.g. XP Home)
- Graphics Card (e.g. ATI Radeon)
- Sound Card Y/N
- Speakers Y/N
- Monitor type and size (e.g. 15,17,19” or CRT or TFT
This information can be obtained in a number of ways, the specifications
can be easily sought by clicking on the “start” menu, then “run” menu and type in “dxdiag”.
If you then “save all information” and e-mail it to them as a text
file.
SELLING
If you do pass on or sell your old computer however do be aware of the dangers of
Identity theft. Your hard drive even if you have deleted the information or even reformatted the disk,
it will still contain retrievable files and information which can be accessed by the criminal fraternity
using advanced data recovery techniques.
Ask you local Dorchester computer company if they assist
with certified disk wiping or disk destruction services as this is the safest way of ensuring that your
data does not get into the wrong hands especially if you are selling your old system to an unknown buyer or on
ebay for example.
